The Ministry of Agriculture, MOFA, has decided to improve the quality of exported fruits and vegetables. It became clear that Ghana will have to improve their post harvest facilities to regain their leading position as exporter of pineapples. Other produce, like mangoes and bananas will follow quickly.

Below you see a diagram of an ideal cold chain:

The port of Tema will be the first major step towards improvement. With the help of the WorldBank the existing Shed 9 will get an upgrade from general storage to a fully functional logistic centre, with pre cool and storage facilities.

Adviesburo Verhoef and VEK Adviesgroep have been selected to design and supervise.

During his visit of early August 2006 of Mr. Quintin Koehler, the progress of the works have been checked. It appeared that Frigo Ghana, the contractor for this work, does a good job so far. The pictures below show the works as per 2-8 2006.

Progress of the works; January 2007

The pictures below show the situation as per 2 January 2007. The construction of the cold rooms has started. The condensers have been placed at their final destination. A temporarily power supply will be available, until the final one is installed in July 2007

Progress of the works; April/May 2007

The progress of the works is excellent. The contractor, Frigo Ghana, is finishing it's job soon. Unfortunately there is no electrical power at the moment; so we have to wait for that. Hopefully this will be solved in June 2007.
